U.S. President To Visit Cambodia Next Year

AKP Phnom Penh, October 17, 2011 –


U.S. President will visit Cambodia for the first time next year when the country hosts the ASEAN-U.S. Summit in Phnom Penh, H.E. Koy Kuong, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation told reporters this morning upon a meeting between Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister H.E. Hor Namhong and visiting U.S. Ambassador to ASEAN H.E. David Carden.
The ASEAN-U.S. Summit is scheduled to take place in late November 2012 in Phnom Penh, and the U.S. presidential election will be held in the same year in early November, therefore, the incumbent U.S. President Barack Obama will attend the summit as the new elected U.S. President in the next year’s election will take office in December, he said.
In the meeting with Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Hor Namhong, visiting U.S. Ambassador to ASEAN David Carden expressed the U.S.’ full support to Cambodia for hosting the ASEAN next year, saying that the U.S. was ready to assist Cambodia to chair the ASEAN successfully, the spokesperson said.
For his part, H.E. Hor Namhong called on the U.S. to accelerate its assistance to the Lower Mekong countries – Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam and Laos – under the framework of the Lower Mekong-U.S. cooperation in the areas of environment, education, health and infrastructure.
H.E. David Carden arrived in Phnom Penh yesterday for a four-day visit. During his stay, he will meet with Cambodian education, environment and commerce ministers, and also pay a courtesy call on Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen.
